2020 was a year unlike any other. The UK went into its first Lockdown in March 2020 which resulted in the working environment dramatically changing in a short space of time. The ramifications of COVID across the world have put IT as one of the most important aspects of a company’s plans going forward.
Worldwide IT spending is projected to total $3.8 trillion in 2021, an increase of 4% from 2020, according to the most recent projections from Gartner. And as we approached 2021 Trams received several enquiries from customers on how we could help to improve their working environment through IT solutions.
Based on conversations with current and new clients, we have listed the areas most likely to be adopted and companies utilising IT budgets.
Cloud Services
While vaccinations for COVID are being rolled out across the UK, it is unlikely the entire working population will be vaccinated until the latter part of 2021. As a result, IT solutions are being discussed at the Board level as companies re-evaluate their real estate commitment, employee collaboration and interaction with customers. In 2019, 45% of enterprises prioritised a hybrid solution above all others; 31% of enterprises saw the public cloud as their top priority.
Between 2019 and 2020 there has been a massive shift in businesses opting for hybrid cloud working practices and there will most likely be an even larger increase in 2021. Whether increasing Cloud bandwidth or organising for the first time, it will allow employees to work from anywhere and easily collaborate.
Work from Anywhere
Having an agile workforce has enabled companies to continue trading in tough circumstances. Around 85% of UK businesses were able to continue conducting business in 2020 with 60% of the UK’s adult population working from home, which was largely down to portable devices and the applications available to employees.
‘Anywhere operations’ remain vital to emerge successfully from COVID-19 and a reason why companies are moving to a Cloud-based platform (fully or partially). As a result, we are also seeing a large increase in companies requiring a device-managed solution so hardware can be delivered directly to employees with configuration and installation completed via the Cloud.
Enterprise Mobility solutions such as Jamf Pro and INTUNE also provide a secure single sign-in across various applications such as Zoom, Slack and Office365. These time-saving solutions help all IT departments secure end-user devices and have current and new employees up and running and working faster.
With the “Work Anywhere” environment we also predict to see more employees utilising their own devices for work-related tasks, which can cause security issues. Combine home or work devices with residential or public Wi-Fi and the threat of cyber-attacks increases.

Cyber Security
Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing and most focused areas at the moment. Ransomware attacks are estimated to cost around $6 trillion each year as new threats are created, and hackers become more sophisticated.
The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and DPA (Data Protection Act) 2018 require organisations to implement appropriate security measures to protect personal data. Otherwise, there's a risk of substantial fines.
In the modern world, we hold important information across everyday devices which is why Cyber security is a critical business issue for every organisation. Trams works with several specialist organisations offering modern data protection including Sophos, MimeCast and Barracuda Networks.
